Science across East and West

The Galileo-Xu Guangqi Meetings were created as a forum for strategic exchanges in relativistic astrophysics and related theoretical, experimental and observational fields. Beginning in Shanghai in 2009, the series expanded cooperation between China, Italy and the wider scientific communities of Asia, Europe and the Americas.

The name honors Galileo Galilei and Xu Guangqi, the collaborator of Matteo Ricci who helped introduce the works of Euclid and Galileo to China. The meetings connect the roots of modern scientific research in East and West with contemporary studies of the Sun, stars and the Universe.

The original organizers envisaged an international forum of 274 participants, equally drawn from Asia and the rest of the world, with international and local organizing committees. They encouraged participation from Korea and Taiwan alongside scientists from China, Europe and the Americas.

Scientific Focus

Einstein’s theory of relativity connects observations from space observatories, ground-based telescopes and underground particle experiments.

  • General relativity, gravitation and cosmology
  • X-ray and gamma-ray astrophysics
  • Gravitational waves and precision tests of relativity
  • Stars, neutron stars, black holes and gamma-ray bursts
  • Large-scale structure, dark matter and astroparticle physics
  • Solar observations and the history of astronomy
