MeerTRAP: Searching for FRBs and pulsars on the go | |||||

Abstract |
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are a new class of transients that have puzzled astronomers for the last decade. The recent localisation of a repeating burst has revealed a wealth of information about these enigmatic sources and their hosts. The new results call for rapid detections and localisations along with multi-wavelength follow-up for host identification. This can only be achieved from real-time, commensal searches for FRBs on existing and upcoming radio telescopes. MeerTRAP is one such project, that will search for fast radio bursts and pulsars commensally on the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. MeerTRAP fields will be shadowed by MeerLICHT giving MeerTRAP the edge in rapid multi-wavelength follow-up for fast radio bursts compared to other facilities around the world. I will talk about the prospects and challenges involved in such a large-scale undertaking and give an overview of current status for the same. |
