Cosmic Explorer: a 40-kilometer gravitational-wave interferometer | |||||

Abstract |
With second-generation gravitational-wave detectors now making routine detections of binary coalescences, efforts are underway to develop a third generation of detectors to expand the reach of the global network to cosmological distances. Detectors of the third generation will be longer, colder, and more sensitive than today's detectors. Cosmic Explorer is a proposed 40-kilometer interferometer that will build on mature technologies to enhance the global gravitational-wave network. The third-generation network will make detections out to a redshift of 100, encompassing coalescences from the remnants of the earliest stars. The network will also detect nearby coalescences with exquisite fidelity, enabling precision tests of general relativity and neutron-star physics. I will talk about the prospects for realizing Cosmic Explorer, and the science that we hope to access. |
