Abstract |
Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are transient events characterized by short, intense and highly-variable emission of soft gamma-rays. Although the emission from these objects is observed mainly in the sub-MeV band, the 10-years observations of Fermi-LAT have proven that GeV emission may be considered a relatively common feature for at least the brightest GRBs. However, the number of photons detected at these energies is still rather limited due to the poor effective area of space-based detectors. This has left many important physics questions unanswered and motivates observations with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is the first hybrid IACT array composed of four 12 m diameter and one 28 m diameter telescopes. The ~600 m^2 collection area of the largest telescope, allowing an energy threshold well below 100 GeV, is particularly suitable to observe gamma-rays from GRBs with an unprecedented sensitivity. In this contribution, I will describe the H.E.S.S. GRB observation program, trigger conditions of GRB follow up and the analyses of several tens of GRBs. This sample represents one of the largest list of GRB observations with IACTs and provides results for GRB modeling at very high energy. |
