Abstract |
Universal metrics are simultaneous vacuum exact solutions to all higher-order theories of gravity with the Lagrangian constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its derivatives of arbitrary order. Similarly, universal electromagnetic fields are p-forms F that solve (virtually) any generalized electrodynamics (containing arbitrary derivatives and powers of F). We present necessary and sufficient conditions for universality for all four-dimensional spacetimes except the Petrov type II. We also discuss various results on universal p-forms, conditions that universality imposes on the p-forms and the background spacetime and explicit examples of universal p-forms.
