Title |
A Search for Excess Coincidence from Unidentified Burst Sources Proliferating in Advanced LIGO Data | |||||

Abstract |
With the discovery of a half dozen strong-signal binary coalescences involving black holes and neutron stars, such burst sources are now verified as a primary class of signals for LIGO's astrophysics mission. These few spectacular events must be the tip of a very large iceberg of a multitude of burst Gravitational Wave (GW) events that remain too weak to be individually identified and detected. As we move from the discovery phase of GW Astronomy to the productive astrophysics phase, it is crucial to scour the time series data for all recoverable signs of real GW events. In this student-led research project, an algorithm has been designed and executed to search for excess coincidence between interferometers due to short-period bursts hiding in the LIGO Online Science Center (LOSC) database. Our algorithm and results so far are presented, using data from the O1 run for Advanced LIGO. |

Einstein-Maxwell Solutions for the Propagation of Test Fields through Specific Realizations of the Plane-Symmetric Kuang-Li-Liang Metric | |||||

Abstract |
Certain cases of the Kuang-Li-Liang metric serve as a relatively simple yet nontrivial system, with a variety of interesting properties: a plane-symmetric metric, generated by null radiation, with nonzero Ricci and Weyl tensors, and satisfying the appropriate energy conditions, with the freedom to specify a variety of functions for the spatial dependence on the metric in the one varying direction. This class of metric is therefore fairly simple to work with, yet is complicated enough to exhibit interesting physical behaviors. In this research, we study the propagation of (test particle) electromagnetic fields through this background spacetime, using various specific realizations of the metric. |
