Compact binary inspiral and the science potential of third generation ground-based detectors |
Abstract _ |
In coming years, advances in interferometer technology will allow for a significant enhancement in the sensitivities of ground-based gravitational wave observatories. Focusing on compact binary inspiral and using the EGO noise curve as a guide, we investigate the science potential of third generation ground-based detectors. Because of their increased sensitivity at low frequencies, such instruments would be able to observe both stellar mass and intermediate mass binaries over cosmological distances and allow for high-accuracy parameter estimation. We demonstrate how they would have qualitative advantages over existing and currently planned detectors regarding astrophysics and cosmology, and for testing general relativity. |
