Moving Punctures are not ``Punctures''

Abstract_

The relevance of stationary representations of black holes for the binary black-hole problem in numerical relativity has received little attention, at least in gauges popular for numerical simulations. Making the physical stationarity of the final black hole manifest is obviously desirable from a numerical point of view. Here we consider the non-spinning case, where we present the stationary solutions which are approached in numerical simulations that use the standard 1+log and harmonic slicing conditions. We discus some implications of our result, in particular provide insight into a method known as ``moving punctures'', whose success has recently brought about a phase transition in the field of numerical relativity.
