Magnetodynamics and its Applications in Astrophysics |
Abstract _ |
If the magnetic field of magnetized plasma is so strong that the particle inertia and pressure can be ignored and yet the free electric charges are sufficiently plentiful to ensure perfect or almost perfect conductivity then the dynamics of such plasma can be accurately described within the frameworks of ideal or resistive Magnetodynamics. In this talk I will review the basic properties of Magnetodynamics and present different ways of deriving its equations. I will also show that for the problems involving slow evolution around equilibrium state these equations become very similar to the familiar equations of non-relativistic MHD. Finally, I will review recent numerical studies of the black hole and neutron star magnetospheres carried wihin the framework of Magnetodynamics. |
