Axisymmetric Systems in General Relativity |
Abstract _ |
We discuss the application of the gauge theory formulation of gravity to axisymmetric systems. Two main areas are explored. The first concerns formulating the equations directly in terms of intrinsically physical quantities. This formulation sheds light on the uniqueness theorems of Carter and Robinson by demonstrating that the key step is the restriction of the solution to type D. The second area relates to the nature and physical properties of the Kerr singularity, resurrecting an issue that was never satisfactorily resolved. |
