The QPO frequency - spectral index correlation |
Abstract _ |
The galactic black hole and neutron star binaries often show correlated timing and spectral properties, yielding a wealth of information on the physical environment of these systems, as well as their accretion geometry. One particular correlation, between the spectral index and the QPO frequency, sticks out among the others for two reasons. First, the correlation is very strong, even for observations taken a few hours apart. Second, the presence of a cut-off in the correlation can potentially be used as a tool to distinguish black hole systems from neutron star systems. In this presentation, first the observational aspects of the correlation will be reviewed. Then the interpretations of the correlation will be discussed, and a comparison between the neutron stars and black holes will be made. |
